Aziz Farmanfarmaian

Abdolaziz Farmanfarmaian was one of the foremost architects of the first generation of modern Iranian architecture. Born in 1921, he pursued his higher education at the prestigious École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he developed the professional foundations that would define his career. His education exposed him to the principles of modern architecture, structural rationalism, and contemporary design methodologies, shaping an architectural approach that combined technical rigor with a strong sense of spatial clarity.
Upon returning to Iran, Farmanfarmaian began practicing during a period of rapid national modernization, when the country was investing heavily in new administrative, cultural, educational, and infrastructural institutions. Recognizing the need for a more systematic model of architectural practice, he founded Farmanfarmaian Associates, one of Iran’s first fully organized multidisciplinary architectural and engineering firms. The office introduced a new professional framework based on collaborative design, interdisciplinary coordination, and standardized project management, setting a benchmark for modern architectural practice in Iran.
Farmanfarmaian’s work was distinguished by its commitment to functional planning, structural order, the integration of modern construction technologies, and a thoughtful response to Iran’s cultural and climatic context. His projects consistently demonstrated how international modernist principles could be adapted to local conditions without compromising architectural quality or contextual sensitivity.
Among his most significant works are the Mehrabad International Airport, the Azadi Stadium Complex, numerous governmental and university buildings, and a wide range of major national projects commissioned during the 1960s and 1970s. Collectively, these works played a defining role in shaping the architectural identity of modern Iran and established new standards for the design of large-scale public buildings.
Farmanfarmaian remains one of the central figures in the consolidation of modern architecture in Iran. Beyond his individual buildings, his enduring legacy lies in the institutionalization of professional architectural practice and his lasting contribution to the advancement of contemporary architecture in the country.
