Karim Taherzadeh Behzad is considered one of the pioneers of architecture in the 20th century. The expatriation of intellectuals and constitutionalists in
1908 left him no choice but to leave his homeland. He continued his education in the University of Fine Arts in Istanbul and later in Berlin Academy of Architecture.
On his return to Iran, in 1926, he was the first Iranian architect in practice, educated abroad.
The first building by Taherzadeh Behzad in Iran was Ferdowsi’s mausoleum, a manifestation of historical approaches and the Persian identity. Through creative
use of local or non-local motifs and elements, he presented his ability in developing a new architecture. The architecture of Krim Taherzadeh Behzad, influenced by the historicist approaches in the European architecture of the time, shifts from a free selection of decorations and use of motifs and elements of different styles in some buildings, like Shah Reza Hospital, towards a more simple, less decorated one as in Railway Station Building.
