As one of the pioneers of this generation, he played a significant role in the country’s architectural transition from traditional building practices to the principles of modern architecture. Upon completing his studies abroad, he began his professional career at a time when Iran was undergoing rapid urban development, expanding its administrative infrastructure, and establishing new models of residential architecture. This period provided unprecedented opportunities for internationally trained architects to contribute to the transformation of the built environment.
\nZafar Bakhtiar was involved in the design of a wide range of residential, administrative, and educational buildings. In the field of housing, he was among the earliest architects in Iran to apply the fundamental principles of modern architecture to spatial organization. His residential designs emphasized the functional separation of spaces, abundant natural lighting, effective cross-ventilation, and a coherent relationship between interior and exterior environments. These qualities represented a marked departure from traditional domestic architecture and reflected a new understanding of residential space shaped by modern architectural thought.
\nIn his civic and governmental commissions, Zafar Bakhtiar adopted an architectural language characterized by formal simplicity, geometric clarity, and the deliberate avoidance of unnecessary ornamentation. These design principles closely aligned with the ideals of European modernism and contributed to the emergence of a new architectural vocabulary for public buildings in Iran during the formative decades of the twentieth century.
\nAlongside architects such as Mohsen Foroughi, Zafar Bakhtiar should be regarded as one of the influential figures in the institutionalization of early modern architecture in Iran. His contribution lay not only in the buildings he designed but also in helping establish modern design methodologies and advancing architecture as a professional discipline during a pivotal period in the country’s architectural history.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
Keyqobad Zafar Bakhtiar belonged to the first generation of Iranian architects who received their
