He spent eighteen years abroad, first in Istanbul, where he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, and later, in 1918, in Berlin, where he was admitted to the Berlin Academy of Architecture. During his years in Germany, Taherzadeh collaborated closely with a circle of Iranian intellectuals in exile, playing a significant role in the publication of the influential periodicals Iranshahr and Kaveh. This intellectually productive period culminated in the publication of his research monograph The Masters of Art (Saramadan-e Honar) in 1923, one of the earliest systematic studies of Iranian art and architecture.
Although he was accepted into the doctoral program at the Berlin Technical University, Taherzadeh chose to return to Iran in 1926, where he embarked on an extensive professional career.
His architectural practice unfolded in two distinct phases. The first comprised seven years of work in Mashhad, during which he designed the Mausoleum of Ferdowsi, his most celebrated achievement. He later moved to Tehran, where he joined the State Railway Organization and was responsible for the design of numerous public buildings, including the Railway and Office building in Rah-Ahan Square.
Taherzadeh’s professional legacy represents a significant chapter in the formative years of architecture as a modern profession in Iran. His career demonstrates how a constitutionalist intellectual successfully transformed the experiences of political exile, rigorous academic training, and a deep commitment to Iranian cultural identity into an architectural vision that helped shape the foundations of modern Iranian architecture.

Karim Taherzadeh Behzad, a prominent
