After studying at the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts, he graduated in architecture in 1909 and began his professional career through extensive travels across the Middle East, first in Egypt and later in Baghdad. With the outbreak of the First World War, he joined the French Army before returning to Paris at the end of the conflict. In 1919, he married Yedda Roux, an accomplished artist and painter, who would later become both his lifelong companion and an active collaborator in his archaeological expeditions, particularly at the Buddhist sites of Bamiyan in Afghanistan.
The year 1928 marked a defining turning point in Godard’s career, when he arrived in Iran under a twenty-year contract to oversee archaeological and architectural activities. This appointment initiated the most influential period of his professional life. Working closely with Yedda, he conducted archaeological surveys, supervised excavations, and designed a number of landmark architectural projects, while publishing the results of his research in leading scholarly journals. Among his most celebrated architectural works in Iran are the Tomb of Hafez in Shiraz and the National Museum of Iran (Museum of Ancient Iran) in Tehran, both of which exemplify his thoughtful synthesis of Iranian architectural traditions and modern design principles.
Godard remained professionally active in Iran until 1960, after which he returned to Paris. His final major publication, The Art of Iran, represents the culmination of decades of research devoted to Iranian art, architecture, and cultural heritage. Godard’s contribution to the architectural history of Iran extends far beyond the design of individual monuments; through his conservation efforts, and architectural practice, he played a pivotal role in shaping the modern understanding and interpretation of Iran’s architectural legacy.

André Godard, the French architect and archaeologist, was born in 1881 in Chaumont, France.
